Methodological Issues of Case Study in Family Research

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze and discuss the methodological issues of case study which had family as an unit of analysis.
Methods: Four Databases were utilize in order to retrieve case studies in family research published between 1980 and 2010. Methodological issues of eight studies were examined in terms of their conceptual design, technical design, and presentation style.
Results: Identified issues related to data collection included lack of clear definition of a case, gathering only one source of data, gathering different types of data across cases, and having inconsistent data gathering processes across cases. Issues related to data analysis included limited description on how certain types of data were analyzed and inconsistent data analysis methods used with research design. Issues related to the presentation of results were having limited description on multiple perspectives and having limited description on the differences between the standard and extreme cases.
Conclusion: Across discipline, methodological issues which questioned the quality of case study were present. Rigor, especially, in identifying the case, should be considered to keep the integrity of study in case study methodology. Establishing protocol for conducting case studies for novice researchers is needed to make an inroad into the development of case study methodology.
